I think that Henrik needed the hankercheif because it meant something to him like a clue and only Mama and Henrik knew what it was. The germans meant that the woman don't sew hankercheifs.

Emotions
I think the emotions were sorrowness and confusion. There was sorrowness because someone had died and no one was talking and Annemarie felt confused because no one brought any food like they did at Lise's funeral.
